Luke was a Mary Sue. Jedi strong in the force and expert fighter pilot even though he was raised as a robot repairman/moisture farmer. At least Rey's ship knowledge and mechanical skills was explained considering she spent years salvaging parts from derelict ships for a living. Anakin was even worse, considering he was an expert mechanic, robotics tech, pod racing champion, pilot who single-handedly destroyed an orbital Droid Control Ship, and Jedi before he hit puberty.
But Luke wasn't immediately a lightsaber expert in ep. IV in fact he only got some basic training and never got into an actual light saber fight untill the end of ep.V after training with Yoda.

He was pretty expert at deflecting the training remote's blasts blindfolded after just one lesson.
I know it is off topic but I think you will find this interesting.Some ammo against the Steve Shives clip Invidia keeps referring to as proof of her position;
Given Rey's parentage, surely she would've been strong in The Force?
That parentage was an afterthought it was invented because Rian Johnson basically forgot to look at the continuation of her story and herritage beyond his own movie.In fact if we solely go by TLJ her parentage had no connection with powerful Force users Kylo Ren said they were nobodies remember?Rey Becoming part of Palpatine's herritage was only created by J.J. to at least have some convincing explanation for why Rey is so powerful.

I remember that. Also remember thinking that I couldn't see how Luke or Leia could have a "forgotten" child and wondered who Rey's parents really were as there was no way she wouldn't turn out to have some sort of heritage.

But that was The Force it wasn't so much about fighting or defending but rather acknowledging the existence of The Force and letting it guide him.
