Discuss Star Wars : Les Derniers Jedi

I still can’t get over the fact that my least favorite star wars film (ep.7) is still a better movie than this. The state of Star Wars now is so bad that I’m actually welcoming the return of JJ Abrams.

I'm just curious. Did you buy into any specific theories about Rey's parents or the mystery of Snoke's rise to power? I have a feeling that much of the negative reaction is due to the disappointment that the story went in a different direction and didn't confirm strongly held theories that Rey was related to the Skywalkers (or another well-known character from the past) or that Snoke was killed without much more information being revealed about him. I'm just curious if that plays a part in your negative feelings toward this movie.

I don´t understand why so many fanboys think that the dislike of this movie had anything to do with failed expectations. It has to do with the character destruction of one of our childhood heroes among other things.

I hated The Force Awakens, and while I thought this one was a little better, the treatment of the old characters was HORRIBLE.

Everything that was set up in episode 7 was shot down in 8, I didn’t buy into any theories about rays parents or snoke but they way they handled those 2 huge mysteries was underwhelming. I hope that snoke comes back in 9 revealed to be plagueis and he used the force to keep himself coming back to life(would also explain his frail appearance), but I doubt it now. With Rey’s parents, I would have much rather they didn’t even acknowledge that issue in this film than the way they handled it. Those are far from the only issues I have with the film though, it was so boring for a Star Wars movie, even more so than phantom Menace to me. At least that movie had an epic Darth maul fight and a cool pod race scene, the only cool scene of this movie I can think of is the Kylo/Rey teaming up scene. I didn’t like that there wasn’t a real lightsaber duel in this movie, It would have been immensely more satisfying if Luke actually showed up and had an epic lightsaber fight with Kylo. The entire Finn/Rose subplot was a snooze fest, the actual plot of he rebels running out of gas was also boring. I don’t care that they killed off Admiral Ackbar but at least do it in a cool Way. They should have made him the new leader after Leia was in a coma and had him do the kamikaze lightspeed thing, it would have had more emotional resonance. Leia flying through space was pretty dumb, I think it’s sad that they kill off Luke and Han while the actors are still alive, and keep Leia alive when Carrie is dead for real life. Just missed opportunities with the original actors. This whole movie seemed like it was full of missed opportunities. Going into 8, there was a lot to be excited about: Luke’s coming back, Rey and Kylo receiving intense training, what happened in between 6 and 7, etc. After episode 8, what is there really to be excited for in episode 9?

@cazsandoval That was just a casual observation based on some negative comments I've heard so far and I was curious if it applied to the OP. I was not trying to be accusatory or dismissive of his opinion. I was just curious to hear reasoning behind the negative rating by @mustard (4/10 in another thread).

I was rather surprised when I first came to this forum this morning that a majority of the posts here so far have a title that indicates disappointment with this movie - surprised because it conflicts with the general public's opinions so far - Score of 75 here on TMDB, 8.2 on IMDb (up from 8.0 last night), 93% positive on Rotten Tomatoes (8.2 avg. critic score). The critics score and Tomatometer currently match The Force Awakens, albeit with fewer reviews calculated so far.

@mustard, thank you for your reply.

Actually, while I had a lot of specific complaints about writing and pacing, perhaps my biggest problem is how often the story just does retreads over old material. For example, Snoke ends up being little more than a very pale imitation of Emperor Palpatine in the original trilogy (and a waste of the talents of Andy Serkis). The whole “join me” is such a tired cliche by now (it even showed up in the first Harry Potter movie, which came out almost two decades ago), and frankly I don’t care what it revealed or didn’t reveal about Rey’s parentage—the fact that it’s even raised the issue shows how little new it has to offer.

In fact, it’s pretty astonishing how much the new trilogy keeps reminding me of Spaceballs, only this time played straight.

As we grow older we realise that the toothfairy and santa clause are not real, they're just mom & dad... we realise that Santa is imaginary.... then at some point we question god, our own existence and struggle with doubt... recognise our leaders, sports icons and other role models as fallible human beings... our childhood pets die and maybe we lose a loved one or at least have our heart broken...

by the time you are in your 20s and above (being generous) losing Luke Skywalker and co, as painful as that may be, shouldn't destroy your ability to appreciate movies... You should be able to see it in the context of this entertainment, rather than as taking it personally... being dissallusioned by people we look up to is a valid theme for a movie...

You'll be able to move on, to let go of this emotional attachment to the new episodes in the series, while still appreciating the good childhood memories... time will heal your wounds 😎

I rate this higher than TFA (6.5/10 vs 3/10).

This newest film just reaps what TFA sowed, e.g., shoddy world building, out-of-character heros, pointless mystsery boxes and a lot of fanfiction rehash (of course TLJ has a lot of genuine flaws too).

All in all, this notion made me lower the score of TFA to 3/10 and, correspondingly, slighty increase TLJ score to positive. I was disappointed and underwhelmed by TLJ but a fair evaluation of of the roots of the mess lead me here.

I finally got around to seeing it after 5 weeks. I can see now why I waited so long. I didn't completely hate it like a lot of people but it really bored me in a lot of places. This movie is just filler setting up for the final act. This film made me appreciate The Force Awakens more. The force awakens is campy but at least you will have fun watching it. For the most part the last jedi is very slow paced and boring with a few action pieces sprinkled throughout. I'd give the last jedi a 7/10, maybe a 6/10 after a rewatch on bluray.

Surprisingly, I liked it more on a rewatch.

I mean, if Finn and Rose could slip past the First Order starships to have a pointless subplot then ALL of the rebels could have and should have just done that in the 1st place, FFS. Pointless car chase scene, was pointless. Pink haired bitch pissed me off for not sharing information with Poe (but in reality it was for the audience's sake which is plain stupid), Canto bight subplot sequence was stupid and pointless. Snoke was ultimately pointless, everything was super pointless.

I liked TLJ slightly more than TFA. It pretty much wrapped it up as far as the original Star Wars characters (Luke/Leia/Han) and their stories are concerned, which it was past time to do (40 years is enough-- time for a new generation --and I say this as someone who was born pre-1977).

And I thought they did a much better job with Rey's character; she was much more believable-- in terms of fallibility, vulnerability, and relatability --as compared to her portrayal in TFA. She basically gets her butt kicked by Kylo AND a First Order guard (not even a Sith!) in the throne room scene, leaving her far from the invincible character she was in TFA.

(Incidentally, this is how I like my male heroes, too-- look at Harrison Ford in the Indiana Jones movies --he always screws up/gets his butt kicked before he finally prevails).

And darn it, I don't care what anyone says . . . I liked the porgs . . . much better than those blasted Ewoks from Return of the Jedi.

I hated what they did to Luke Skywalker but in my opinion what they did to Han Solo was even worse.

I hope Han Solo is still alive! He can't just die like that!
