That was so stupid when he knew someone or something was killing people in the area. His best friend was even one of the victims, yet he goes shooting off fireworks alone.

He was a kid. I think he thought that he was invincible. When I was a kid I didn't think anything could hurt me and did some crazy stuff I would never do now.
I think that Marty thought he wouldn't be a victim nor that there was any danger until it was.

Good point Strannger, kids do stupid, reckless things. Maybe if Marty hadn't been alone it wouldn't be so hard to swallow since kids are usually afraid to be alone in the dark.
