I prefer the "director's cut" or whatever it is, which includes what I consider to be a couple important details. First, there is the bit where Cartwright and Colonel West meet with the Federation president to present a rescue plan. The second is where the Klingon sniper is revealed to be Colonel West, in disguise.
So far there doesn't seem to be a blu-ray release of this version, I've only found it in a DVD form.
They finally came out with a Director's Cut of "Wrath Of Khan" which includes some nice scenes missing from the theatrical version. Will we ever get a blu-ray of the arguably complete Undiscovered Country?

That’s a real downer. I know they chopped about 7 mins off The Motion Picture when they went from VHS to DVD and I think to this day the VHS is the only place where you can see 4 or 5 scenes that aren’t anywhere else. But I can’t understand why they would further chop the movies from DVD to bluray. I bought the bluray set a while back but haven’t gotten around to re-watching them all. I think I stopped at Khan. They definitely cleaned up a good bit, like the matte outlines around Regula 1 which were pretty obvious. And in TMP they cleaned up the infamous scene where Kirk and Spock are in spacesuits outside the Enterprise and you can see studio lights & scaffolding haha. Bummer that they had to go and cut scenes and ruin an otherwise great upgrade to bluray.

There is a Director's Cut of TMP from DVD that is 4:28 longer than the current blu-ray version, but I haven't seen the longer version available on blu-ray.
Maybe the DVD version came from somewhere overseas, I'm not sure where it was actually made.
For a long time, the only way to see the longer version of Wrath was sometimes they'd show it on HBO etc.
It's the same with "Armageddon," occasionally on Cinemax or whatever they show the longer version where Harry visits his dad and stuff, but still no sign of that coming out on DVD or Blu-Ray.

Wow you are absolutely correct. I just hauled out my directors cut DVD set (2001) and compared it to the bluray set (2009) and here’s what I got...
TMP: VHS 143 min, DVD 136 min, bluray 131 min
KHAN: DVD 116 min, bluray 112 min
SEARCH: DVD 105 min, bluray 105 min
VOYAGE: DVD 118 min, bluray 118 min
FRONTIER: DVD 106 min, bluray 106 min
UNDISCOVERED: DVD 113 min, bluray 113 min
My dvd & bluray are the same length for The Undiscovered Country, so maybe the version with those 2 scenes is only on VHS and/or special DVD. I do remember seeing both those scenes on my VHS copy but that tape is long gone, along with my vhs player :(

The "extended" version of Undiscovered Country I have, from dvd, shows a running length of 1:48:36. The blu-ray version is 1:49:59. There are a few bits from the "extended" version that are cut a little shorter compared to the blu-ray, but there are added scenes which more than make up for it in terms of quality if not of actual running time.
