Very true, he was mostly unknown to the general public. Somebody online made a very accurate statement that the moviemakers traded Stark and Hawkeye’s basic personalities from comicbooks, making Clint the silent type and Stark the wisecracker.
The general public knew Superman, Batman, Spiderman and Wonder Woman but the rest of the comic book pantheon was unknown to them. It really wasn't that long ago maybe 20 years ago that the comic book world was barely thought of in the mainstream. Now you can't get away from it. Which is a good thing. What was once laid low is now elevated.
