I'm not sure if this is a result of watching the film in 3 parts, or if I'm stupid, or if the film really is as confusing as I think it is, but whatever the reason - can somebody please explain WTH happened in this, and why Doc broke the fourth wall at the end? And any one of the weirdly trippy (possibly didn't happen?) moments, like when he and Big Foot speak the same words at exactly the same time?

Sorry, I can't help. The movie was super confusing. What was it about? I couldn't tell you.

I think that's basically the point - we watch the movie as if in a doped up haze and are never really certain what is occurring. I wouldn't bother trying to follow the plot - it's deliberately convoluted.
Enjoyable enough film if you go with that. Phoenix is very good.

Recently watched it for the first time...
The feeling we're supposed to get is a stoner haze, as we see the film from Doc's perspective.... BUT... there is more going on... The MK Ultra stuff, brainwashed folks, etc... As well as the cointel pro stuff and convoluted drug operations...
Strange film... I left with a sense that the director was alluding to more that what I initially expected... There is something significant to the setting, the time period and the other goings on...
It doesn't work as well as There Will Be Blood or The Master... but i think there is more to the themes of the film, than the surface plot of a stoner detective trying to find his ex girlfriend and some real estate guy...

In the very beginning when he was interviewing someone, he writes in his notebook "NOT A HALLUCINATION," so you have to kind of view the rest of what happens through that filter. Like when he yelled at the sight of the baby picture and what-not. His moment with Bigfoot and the matching dialogue was due to "doper esp," from what I can gather. I'm still trying to figure out that ending though.
