If They Didn't Go Down the Tunnel ...

If Holly and Jenson never went into the tunnel (the time portal), then the creatures wouldn't have trapped them in the portal room in the first place. Right? Because the creatures wouldn't have existed (the Russians burned all the other experimental 'volunteers'). Then, Holly, Jenson, and JB could have lived then, right?

They just had to make the decision that they would rather die than risk turning into monsters or getting fused to a wall or something.
