So I've now watched:-
Hobbs & Shaw
The Fate of the Furious
Furious 7
Question is - What should I be watching next? Furious 6 or Tokyo Drift?
I ask because I've read that Tokyo Drift takes place after the events of 6, so the going forward order is ... 5, 6, 3, 7. BUT for me going backwards (and understanding it's a bit of an offshoot and having been told they really start at 5 and not to bother watching the ones before that) do I really need to bother with Tokyo Drift or should I just go with 6 next?

If the above order is how you've watched them so far, I'd go: 6 then 5 (might as well keep going backwards). Then, if you still want more, start at 1 and work forwards. The earlier films aren't without merit, but from 5 they decided that the franchise was going to be a dumb OTT action series as opposed to the earlier slightly more plausible track. I think you can pinpoint when they tested this idea and it was in the 4th film: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZXXpX29Xt-U
You're right about the odd internal chronology though, should you want to watch the others in chronological order.
FWIW I did: 5 at the cinema and loved it, repeated the experience with 6, then went back and watched them in release order and have watched 7 and later at the cinema and I am in no way a petrolhead.

Thanks - think I'll just go 6 then 5 then. Looks like the earlier ones were a bit sketchy anyway in terms of actually being a series (Vin Diesel and others not in all of them).
Not a petrolhead either - Jumanji and The Meg accidentally led us into these films!

Just to be clear - Have you read that I was watching these films in reverse order, then decided that it would be funny to question if I was mentally challenged? It that what has happened here Gus?

Not at all, I was simply wondering if you're a visitor from a parallel world where time runs opposite to ours.

Ah ok, I see. No I'm from this world where sadly time runs down relentlessly for us all...
Anyway, I'm glad to see that you weren't intelligence shaming me there.

I couldn't stop! Down to 4 now. It just made sense - saw Dom getting sprung by his family salute! at the beginning of 5 so we had to continue to see what had happened...
I think we will go 1 next to complete the Dom / Brian connection then that will be it.

You say that now, but then it will be, "Might as well see the last remaining one with Paul Walker" and then, "Hell, there's only one left - I was wondering how Han fits in".
Then, before you know it, it will be: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dtwx1rvd-eA

😂 You may be right! It's amazing - went for years thinking I'd never watch any of these films but now after watching down to 4, we rewatched the last scene of Furious 7 and there's me biting down hard on my bottom lip to stop the tears 😆
Isn't Tokyo Drift number 3 though? Neither 2 or 3 have Dom in them from what I remember reading, so if we continue on past 1 it would probably be 3 then 2. This would give a correct reverse viewing order of:-
H&S, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 1, 3, 2.

2F2F is just Brian and introduces Roman and Tej. FF:TD has a cameo appearance from Vin D, but was Han's first and (chronologically) last appearance. It also introduced Sean (seen at the funeral in 7 and rumoured for 9).
I don't think it really matters which order you watch them in. You know you'll end up watching both of them in the end!
