Discuss Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales

I don't get it, while the first film gets a respectable rating, the sequels however keep being disliked by most people. I just don't get it? I've enjoyed all the films so what is everyone's problem?

To be honest, I actually really love the first three, the fourth was okay, enjoyable but not all that good, and the fifth was actually pretty bad. No matter how much I try to find a reason to like it, I just cannot.

What was actually bad about the fifth one?

I disagree, he's like that in all of the PotC movies.

The focus of the 1st film was Jack Sparrow - lovable, funny, and was Jack mellow or just doing a great Keith Richards? I kept waiting for the same Jack to show up in the sequels and he didn't. Did get stalked in Pirates 3. This person kept following me around every time I moved to get away from him at the 3 pm showing. So didn't like that sequel. Rented the next one.

People hate EVERYTHING. Pay them no mind. This movie was hilarious. Laughed the whole time.

I'm right there with you, and this latest one may have been my favorite of them all. I love this franchise and am sad to see it end. It seems American audiences have totally lost interest.

I haven't seen any of the films, but still, dislike the entire franchise -- based on what I've seen of it.

Sequels are rarely as good as the original.

I too have same opinion. It was as if they just wanted to wrap up making of the movie the moment they set foot on the deck grin .

Sorry for the late reply. There where many issues. Jack was rather inactive in his own story, the villain was sloppily written and never a serious enough threat. In fact the writing was all over the place, and felt like three different stories just crammed together. It never really felt like a fully thought-out story, more like they had taken cut scraps from the earlier films and pasted them together in a frankensteinian script.

Yes, yes, and yes. You touch on so many issues within this film! Jack was just used a clown constantly in this film, just there to give you cheap laughs. That seemed like an overall problem for the film - it wanted so badly to be a comedy, and then suddenly it became very serious towards the end. Can't say I really cared that much for Henry... aka Williams boy, as I had to look up the name in spite of watching it yesterday. Using William/Elizabeth as cameos, more or less, doesn't really help it either. And why is there no mention of Bootstrap??? It's such a mess... Carina played really well, although the ending and her revelation was first off too predictable, and those things happened in such quick succession that it never gets solidified properly. I kind of sat there feeling like it was not worth it to write of such a major character (her father) who's a damn stable in the series...

However, I did like parts of the backstory on how Jack got the Sparrow name. In spite of being the latest addition to the series, the CGI looks absolutely terrible compared to all the previous older entries. It really caught me off, caught multiple times how obvious it looked that it was CGI, which was not the case of the four first films. Furthermore, I found it quite annoying how they felt the need to judge the past through the eyes of current morality in terms of constantly banging on the "women not allowed, women are dumb"-trope, as it only works against the characters when you are bumped on the head constantly... I've quite liked all the instalments thus far, but this one was incredibly mediocre. Kind of makes me glad Johnny Depp is not going back to Disney, so they can screw this up any further.
