Ida is a woman who was adopted to Finland from Africa as a child. Ida is an unemployed seamstress approaching her thirties and still lives at home with her activist mother Kati. Kati wants to fix her daughter's life and offers her a job at her work. Encouraged by her new friend Ville, Ida, however, sets out for Berlin in order to find a job and to prove to her mother that she can manage on her own. Meanwhile, Kati has been told that she is seriously ill, but she does not want to mention it to Ida in fear of standing in the way of her daughter's struggle for independence. Ida wants to have a life of her own, but what will she have left at the end of the day?

Maata meren alla kertoo ompelijaksi kouluttautuneesta Idasta, joka asuu yhä adoptioäitinsä Katin kanssa. Ida hakee töitä kehnolla menestyksellä, mutta aikaansaavan aktivistiäitinsä apua suorapuheinen tytär vähiten kaipaa. Ystävänsä Villen rohkaisemana Ida kuitenkin löytää itsestään voiman ja halun lähteä liikkeelle - Berliiniin - ja todistaa näin äidilleen, että pärjää myös omillaan. Ida haluaa itsenäistyä, ihastua, löytää oman paikkansa ja rakentaa elämänsä, mutta mitä hänelle lopulta on jäämässä käteen?

Ida est une femme qui a été adoptée en Finlande depuis l'Afrique lorsqu'elle était enfant. Ida est une couturière au chômage approchant la trentaine et vit toujours à la maison avec sa mère militante Kati. Kati veut arranger la vie de sa fille et lui propose un emploi à son travail. Encouragée par son nouvel ami Ville, Ida part cependant pour Berlin afin de trouver un emploi et de prouver à sa mère qu'elle peut se débrouiller toute seule. Pendant ce temps, Kati a appris qu'elle était gravement malade, mais elle ne veut pas en parler à Ida de peur de faire obstacle à la lutte de sa fille pour l'indépendance. Ida veut avoir sa propre vie, mais que lui restera-t-il à la fin de la journée ?
