I could NOT relate to anyone in this movie...a bunch of rich socialites living in upper class NYC on someone else's dime. The "snooty" attitude of Hepburn & her search for a rich husband, and a the stupid male lead falling in love with her somehow (she was beautiful, but I saw NOTHING to fall in love with), and don't get me started on Mickey Rooney's Japanese stereotype..WOW!...what saves it is Henry Mancini's amazing score & the very classic, Hollywood ending kiss in the rain..hit me right in the feels.

I've nothing to add except WELL SAID. I do love the movie, despite sharing your opinions on every front. Every time I watch it, I cry like a baby at the end.

I hear you. It's a guilty pleasure of mine, too.

They were all pretty unrelatable. I remember toward the end when Paul told Holly, "You belong to me." I wanted to laugh... it's self-entitlement in the area of relationships. A perfect way to express one's love for another.

On another hand, Audrey Hepburn is a remarkably beautiful woman and I'm enamored of her. I once read that, in her childhood, she suffered from extreme hunger while in Europe, due to Nazism, I think. This is why she was as thin as a rail. She couldn't pick up much weight, but oy, that face!

I saw that differently. Paul was a "kept man." He's searching for his independence, to become a man. Meanwhile, Holly, conflicted between independence and dependence, doesn't want to be kept, yet doesn't want to be alone. They are both "lost", and they find each other. His assertion "You belong to me" is the final marker of his becoming "a man" (in the Mad Men era of the late 50s/early 60s, before any hint of the social upheaval that was yet over the horizon).

That's all well and good, but people say that about people nowadays, and it doesn't wash like that. Your argument for why Paul says it is pretty strong. I don't know about the reasoning for some of these other Joes out here.
