I just noticed that Gregory Peck, Robert Mitchum, and Martin Balsam — who all appeared in the original 1962 movie — have roles in this one.
I love when actors from original movies are cast in a remake — it's like they're granting glowing approval.
Although I found this movie unpleasant to watch, I might watch them both back-to-back some time to compare.

Very cool, I think you’re right that when an original actor makes a cameo, it’s an implied nod of approval. I’m sure they’re not doing it for the money!
I don’t remember seeing them, but I saw this remake way before seeing the original or even knowing who those actors are. I do remember being really creeped out by this movie. “Unpleasant to watch” sums it up for me too.

Oh yeah, on the "nods" idea. I always enjoy the courtroom scene wherein Judge Heller, played by Gregory Peck, explains to the two rivals that the court doesn't condone "feuds," vendettas and the like(s of which they are engaging in). Scorsese can do a mean pastiche in his own films, and esp. in this one.
