I was being. The Motion Picture is the first oddly numbered film in the series.
Therefore either IT proved the theory wrong STRAIGHT away (which would mean this one couldn't) or, if you're discounting TMP, SfS would be dispelling the theory second time around...
Who actually remembers Search for Spock? I'm sure I've seen many many times, but I still can't remember it. It's that forgettable.
If you forgot this film completely were you confused to see Spock alive in The Voyage Home?
I remember Spock theorized to come back to life because of the Genesis Device, and that the crew of Enterprise went there to check, but had to deal with some other race (I think the Klingons?) who were trying to claim the Genesis device. I just don't remember any other plot points, nor any other details. I do remember details from pretty much every other Star Trek movie (including all the other supposed "bad" ones), except for Nemesis which was just as forgettable.

Nemesis is the only Trek film I've only watched once and it's always gonna stay that way. Awful film.
There was a 2 day marathon of all original & next gen movies here in the UK last weekend with one exception... Nemesis!

Yes, they were Klingons. Their leader was played by the incomparable Christopher Lloyd. He hammed it up but didn't over do it. He brought just the right amount of menace to the film. He felt a tiny bit of remorse for blowing up his ex lover.
Doctor McCoy sometimes thought he was Spock.
Sarek's logic failed him where his son was concerned.
Sulu punished a guy for calling him "Tiny."
Uhura had Mr. Adventure eating right out of her hand.
If Scotty's grandmother was a wagon, she would have wheels.
David Kirk, like his father, cheats a little.
Saavik took young Spock's virginity.
Chekhov got to be part of the self destruct sequence.
Kirk. Had. Enough. Of. You.
John Larroquette was tricked by a Klingon speaking Kirk.
Dame Judith Anderson put the pieces back together.

Any of this ring a bell?
Bits and Pieces. The only thing I'm sure of is I've seen it many times yet cannot remember much about it. While something like Voyage Home or Wrath of Khan, I remember quite a bit and often quote from it. Hell, The Final Frontier was more memorable to me than Search for Spock, "I don't want my pain taken away. I need my pain!"
The one I don't remember is the one that came after the Borg movie. I liked the Borg movie. I even kind of liked the one where Picard meets Kirk. It was disappointing, but entertaining enough.
All I remember about the third Picard movie is that it was on the other side of town about five miles away. Neither my friend nor I had access to a car so we raced. I rode my bicycle and he took the bus. I won. When the movie was over, we argued about whether it deserved one and half stars out of five or two.
I don't remember a thing about the movie itself. Nothing.

Probably Star Trek Nemesis. I think most people actively try to forget that one.

No. It was Insurrection. Not a bad movie really. Just forgettable.
I think the Even/Odd trek rule only applies to non-fans (the crowd pleasing flicks). If someone who's never seen a trek film asks me for 1 film to watch, I'd likely tell them they can jump in at Khan (2), Whales (4), or Shakespeare (6) and they'll enjoy themselves. True fans of course love all of them, just like all the episodes in the series. But you have to admit 1, 3 & 5 have much less action, and if you aren't already familiar with the Kirk/Spock/McCoy dynamic you probably won't get as much out of those 3.
As for the TNG movies, same probably applies. I never watched the TNG series and I hated Generations (1), thought First Contact was good (2), can't remember Insurrection (3) and thought Nemesis was decent (4). So yeah I think there's some truth to the even/odd rule (for the inexperienced).

Deliberately omitted, I presume 😁
