Julia, an only child of an affluent, bank owning family living in Madrid, escapes from her family to get over her grief that her boyfriend has been imprisoned. Julia is a well educated woman, having studied in Switzerland and England, who wants to become a writer. Julia drives to a little village in Asturias called "Corralbos del Sella" and there she stays in a mansion "llendelabarca" of an old childhood friend "Pilara" she had spent many a happy summer with. Also living there is Pilara's mother in law Tia Gala, and her grandson Juanito. Julia's relationship with caretakers, teacher and priest makes Julia, a woman of the spanish capital, perhaps for the first time to not feel so alone.

A 40-es évek Spanyolországában, Madridban él Julia, egy magányos villában. Szerelme festőművész, a kor azonban nem kedvez az igaz szerelmeseknek. A férfiak háborúba mennek. Julián, mielőtt végleg eluralkodna a depresszió, a család öreg barátjával, pszichológusával úgy dönt, hogy jót tesz neki egy kis vidéki utazás. Julia visszatér gyermekkora színterére, Llendelabarcába. Vidéki házukban él Gala, az egykori cseléd, leánya, Pilara és kisfia, Juanito. Mindhárman nagy-nagy szeretettel, s odaadással fogadják a gyógyulni vágyó, mélabús Julia kisasszonyt. A falu tanítója Don Orfeo, aki a színház megszállottja. Felkéri Juliát, hogy írjon át egy középkori klasszikus darabot "Krisztus születéséről" a gyerekeknek, s karácsonykor majd előadhatják a templomban. Julia azonban úgy gondolja, hogy csak néhány napra vagy hétre jött el.

España, finales de los 40. Julia sufre una profunda depresión a causa del encarcelamiento de su novio, un destacado pintor antifranquista. Hija única de una acaudalada familia, es una mujer culta, que se ha educado en Suiza e Inglaterra, se ha licenciado en Filosofía y Letras y quiere ser escritora. Su abatimiento es tal que decide alejarse de Madrid e ir a pasar una temporada al pequeño pueblo asturiano de Cerralbos del Sella, donde está la gran casona familiar -"Llendelabarca"- en la que vivió los felices veranos de su infancia. Allí la espera Tía Gala, la guardesa, que vive con su nuera Pilara y su nieto Juanito. La relación de Julia con ellos, con el maestro don Orfeo e incluso con el desdichado cura don Matías, hace que, quizá, por primera vez en mucho tiempo, la señorita de la capital no se sienta sola.
