This movie is now 49 years old.
It is also my mom's birthday.
Back in 1982, my cousin and I won four tickets to see this movie. That was my mom's birthday present. True, it was a tad self-serving to give her this "present" but she was a fan, too.
She was the one who clued me into the fact that Star Trek was social commentary in the guise of entertainment.
We were all sad when Spock died even though two of us strongly suspected that would be the case. Back then, we didn't need the internet to spread such rumors.

Sorry for being an annoying pedant!
But anyway, great film - particularly love Spock's "by the book" code followed by Kirk chomping on that Apple and giving the "beam us up" line!
And yes, I don't think many people left thinking it would be the last we saw of Spock - although maybe didn't expect to see him in the very next film! There's a funny clip of Shatner on YouTube discussing his revised lines at the end of WoK to pave the way for Nemoy's return.
