SAW IT AT THE THE THEATER.HAVE SEEN IT MANY TIMES SINCE...WONDERFUL FLICK.
Yep, still remember seeing at my local cineplex (can't believe its been 16 years), which was unusual for a movie that normally would've shown at a indie house theater. With the kind of fanbase I think this movie has, shame Universal didn't release some sort of anniversary edition with some new features last year...
I thought it was okay. I rented it one time, back when video stores still existed. I've only watched it once. I'm a fan of Scarlett, but I like her more in other movies.
Yup. An interesting insight into forbidden / platonic love in a unique/ atmospheric setting with a particularly strong performance from Murray both conventionally and comedically. It got a fairly mighty 8/10 from me, with only In The Mood For Love being superior / comparable in my book.
I had wanted to see this film for a long time - but it never had subtitles til it got to Netflix. So - I finally got to watch it and I really cannot see the reason for the good reviews - it was long - it was slow - it was dull. Bill Murray is a good actor - so is Scarlett Johannsen - but this didn't tap into their talents at all. Whenever I see a movie directed by a woman I groan inwardly - because for the most part they are pretty dreadful - Sofia Coppola in particular is so condescending to her audience - in Marie Antoinette she included sneakers in a shot of a lot of her shoes because she wanted the audience to understand that she was only a teenager. That is downright insulting in my view. I hate films without resolutions - I can't see the point of them - it makes me feel like I wasted two hours of my life - this was certainly true of this one.
Saw it on release and hated it, mainly because I had had too many similar experiences of spending nights with vivacious but unobtainable ladies. At least in my case they were age appropriate!
I do know what he whispered at the end, though.
It's, "I'm gonna whisper something that people can't make out and pseudo-intellectuals will think this film is really deep and ponder what my final words were for decades."
