A welcome difference! Space battles and fights are all well and good, but it gets repetitive and boring easily.

Definitely the most cerebral of the Star Trek films that tried to express Gene Roddenberry's vision. Unfortunately there was too much emphasis on special effects and too little on character and dialogue.

Despite the flaws of ST: TMP I do miss this kind of Star Trek. The current films have little to do with the themes and stories of the TV series.

I'm old enough to have seen it in the theaters as a child. We went for one of my friend's birthday parties. I remember falling asleep in the middle part when there seemed to be endless shots of the interior of V'Ger. Only as I got older did I appreciate what they were trying to accomplish. This was a hard Sci-Fi film with exploration and not violence at its core. It's so imperfect, but the long, loving reveal of the new Enterprise remains on of my favorite Trek memories. And Jerry Goldsmith's score was impeccable.

Fun fact: Star Trek TMP was the last major motion picture to feature an overture. If you don't know what that is, look it up. It was one of many elements lost to today's audiences that I feel really made the experience special long ago.

I found it slow with very little character movement. In fact I gave up. Looked great though.

Spielberg and Lucas have used overtures since.

I appreciate this movie way more now than when I was a kid. I wish the cast hadn't been so stiff and serious though.

I saw this movie as a triple feature with ST 2 and 3. We were bored during this one, I have to admit, but Wrath of Khan woke us up.

This movie had its flaws, such as lingering far too long special effects but the story was fine, its a shame later movies chose to go action crazy - losing a certain magic to what the TV show was.

Star Trek The Motion Picture or "Where Nomad has gone before",didn't people notice the similarities between this movie and "The Changeling"?Plus ST V TFF tried to go back to the themes and set up of TOS and most people loathe that one (although I myself think ST V has got some redeeming qualities).

I like ST: TMP a lot. It feels like a sci-fi film done intelligently. I’ll take it any day over ALL the star trek films of the past two decades, most of which are action flicks or just bad movies.

I agree with you plus ST V has some of the best acting by our main three in particular the segment when Sybok tries to persuade our main three to join him. Deforest gets me everytime I see that scene with his father asking him to end his pain and suffering and is also a prime example of Trek at it's finest in dealing with controversial subjects.Nimoy manages to convey a lot of emotions without saying a word when witnessing his birth.And even Shatner not know for his acting skill manages to convey a believable and not ham fisted performance when he gives the speech about needing his pain, I also like the unusual themes ST V explores,searching for God,the nature of the Divine (like in Who Mourns For Adonais?),religious extremism/terrorism and false idols.
