Why did kenshin go to the future?

i was watching the movie yesterday and the scepter just starts glowing after he looks at that scroll. so was it an accident? he said the incantation to travel so did he want to go to a different time? i mean that doesn't really make much sense; he bitches for most of the movie about going back.

I believe it was an accident. He was shocked to find himself in the future. Your right, he does bitch about going back through out the whole movie
