It's hard to select a favourite from Jack Nicholson's glorious run in the early to mid 1970s, but this would be my pick for his finest hour. He is such a ball of energy in this film, knocking every one of Robert Towne's superb lines out of the park. One of the most joyous, infectious performances of the 1970s, and his chemistry with Otis Young and Randy Quaid is palpable. Thoughts?

The acting is solid throughout in this movie. To be blunt, it isn't much of a story, just another road movie really. I think the real value of so many movies made in the decade or so of 'independent' film making is that they are unwitting documentaries of the time. Fascinating to see the minutiae of that place and time.
