I hope people are catching up and finally realising how good Returns is, especially now that Snyder's miserable efforts have shown exactly how not to approach Superman.
Returns has its share of melancholy, but its offset by showing the joy and heroism of Superman - especially during the jet-rescue - one of the finest action scenes ever put to film. You need to show the awesomeness of being a superhero if you're going to show the miserable side of the job - which is all Snyder cares about in his attempt to ape Nolan.
It has problems - Bosworth's Lois is dry, charmless and moody (Amy Adams is better) and the Superkid subplot is annoying, but other than that the film has a great central portrayal by Brandon Routh, who captures the pain of Superman's immortality curse, kicks áss in the action scenes, and is uncannily Reeves-like when he's goofy Clark Kent. Spacey is great as Luthor (much better than bratty Eisenberg) and there are nice comic flourishes from Parker Posey.
Singer totally gets it, he even imported the iconic Williams score. Snyder has no clue. WB backed the wrong horse with him, and their rush to build a DC universe has backfired.

I need to give this movie another watch, probably haven't seen it since it was first released on dvd. I do remember the jet scene being pretty badass though along with Spacey's performance. Hell, I'm sure ANYONE would be better than Eisenberg (he definitely helped kill BvS for me).

Well i don't think this movie was great. But i think its far better than Man of Steel. At least Superman actually tried to save people in this movie. It didn't end with 911 times a billion.

I liked it. The tone was similar to Superman 1 and 2. It’s better than 3, 4, justice league, BvS.
I prefer an upbeat Superman to a moody, angry one. A superman for more innocent times?

It's not better than Superman III, that movie is a misunderstood masterpiece.

I was always a fan of this film but do think it had a couple of major issues:-
The problem of Superboy turning Superman into a family wrecker.
Kevin Spacey approaching Superman from the rear and thrusting that stiff erect pulsing instrument of his into Superman's defenceless body drawing blood. That was far too graphic for any superhero movie but especially Superman.
