Diskuter Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Just rewatched this ahead of The Last Jedi and there's a couple of scenes which are just incredible:-

  1. When she asks Finn if he's with the resistance.
  2. When she finally exchanges names with Finn on the Falcon.

Both times she's (very badly) trying to suppress herself from laughing, resulting in completely out of place on / off smiling. Once you've noticed it you can't help but be amazed that it's actually in the final cut of a major production.

I noticed in the first instance and thought it was intentional.

I need to re-watch the other scene you're referring to....

Yes this has been observed in some reviews. But the deal breaker for me are all the silly Funny Faces she makes, seemingly so to pander to underage girl market. It's distracting.

I don't know what you're talking about. What's wrong with her smiling there exactly?

Do you seriously think that it was impossible to get a shot without any trace of a smile on Daisy's face in those scenes?

I can't say I've liked her as an actress at all at this point. Maybe I'm just biased against her character, but her entire arc feels forced and she's not convincing as a tough street waif turned hero of the rebellion. I just think JJ could have done a better job with casting than he did. Weepy Kylo, too-squeaky-clean Rey, useless Finn, and mopey Poe. Idk.

I didn't think the acting overall was very good, but it got the job done. In general, acting in all the Star Wars movies was never the franchise's strong suit. As for Daisy Ridley, she's no Streep, but I thought she did a pretty good job overall.

She carried the picture better than Hayden did in his. I'm loathe to criticise or compare actors generally. But that is an undeniable truth.

I thought the character of Rey: 1) could have used a mildly higher pitched speaking voice. Daisy’s deep voice just didn’t feel right to me. 2) the first 5 minutes of Rey were great. We see her struggling to get by, trading junk, emoting silently or with facial expressions. I loved it. We needed more of these character-building scenes that made Rey feel like someone we could empathize with. 3) For me, Rey started to disappoint with the two back-to-back “stop holding my hand” lines. That was such a weird line, and things went downhill from there. 4) the failure of Rey as a character is Our fault as the audience. Today audiences want action, fast pace plots. They don’t want exposition, character building. No time for the personal style of filmmaking that existed when Star Wars came out in 1977. Nowadays, the story serves to move from one action scene to the next. If it doesn’t, then the film won’t make money. 5) Disney CAN make strong and believable female characters if they make the effort. I loved The Journey of Natty Gann. Rey should have been more like Natty. Or Hayley Mills in The Chalk Garden (ok, not a Disney film but definitely a Disney star at the time). Heck, I’d settle for a Lady Bird type character, strongly flawed, frequently wrong, failed a lot, but changed as the film progresses.
