A crappy soft reboot that was the most disappointing in the franchise since The Phantom Menace.

I think you're being generous. 1 out of 5 from me, and that's only because I thought it was visually okay.

Better than the Phantom Menace, worse than Attack of the Clones. Jeez that sentence was depressing! grin

It was not as bad as Rogue One. That's the best thing I can say about it.

Of course, it's just rehashed crap.

I try to be objective in all my judgments. As a Star Wars fan I would agree with your rating but as a film critic I cannot deny the fact that the film was semi-entertaining. I also gave The Phantom Menace 3 outta 5 stars but may be the slightly better film for the fact that it was at least an original story and didn't present so many "WTF" moments. Plus it had Darth Maul who is one badass MFer. Albeit 5 whole minutes but he was better than any character in TFA.

I actually liked ATOC. Yes it had a lot of problems but it did have some genuine, "Oh shit, that was badass" moments namely Yoda's entrance and duel with Dooku.

@movie_nazi I actually quite like Attack of the Clones, it gets better with a second viewing, but its renowned by many fans as a bad movie, I don't get how some people can rate it worse than Phantom Menace.

Nothing is worse than that Gungan fest, although the sheer laziness of rehashing Star Wars with bad characterisation from Force Awakens sure tried to beat it!

SW Force Awakens is the worst SW movie by a mile.

I think it's funny that once people got over it the general consensus now seems to be TFA was crap but if you tried to say that one week after release, boy did you get your head chewed off! I know because I was one of the few who said it was crap from the get-go and the overwhelming majority disagreed with me.

I was on the IMDb boards just a few days after release saying it's crap from the get-go as well. wink

Yeah, absolutely. I like ATOC. I gave it a 7 on the IMDB scale (3.5 here). One of the things I did not like about it was something that plagued all three of the prequel films and that was the terribly written dialogue. Lucas just doesn't have the gift for that type of writing. Even the dialogue in A New Hope is meh but in the other two films they were great because he didn't write them. I honestly feel that if Lucas had brought on other writers for the prequels they would have been almost as good as the original trilogy.

The problem I have with this movie is that the magic of Star Wars just isn't there. There is nothing even close to what made the original trilogy so enthralling, it honestly felt more like a mundane tribute from someone too late to the game and didn't fully understand or experience the phenom that it was. The epic Williams score was severely limited, no memorable new creatures, a pathetic emo villain, dialogue & visuals that wouldn't be out of place in a YA series...I'm not a huge fan of the prequels either but with all of their faults, they still gave us something fresh and mostly had that SW "vibe". One of the above posters said it best - this was just lazy and for a saga of this magnitude it's a real kick in the face.

The aliens in this movie were just off especially the ones from Jakku, I can't put my finger on it but they somehow didn’t gel with Star Wars aliens we'd seen before, there was also a lack of the common Star Wars aliens such Twi'leks.

At least many of the aliens from Rogue One looked like they belonged to the Star Wars Galaxy, but they too were wasted being background characters whilst humans took centre stage, as PC Star Wars has to show off every human race these days rather than the aliens they share a galaxy with.

3 out of 5.

I thought TFA was not nearly as good as the OT, but I thought it was better than any of the prequels.

I'll admit that my opinion probably has a lot to do with the fact that they put Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher in TFA, along with Mark Hamill (if only for a minute!). It just brought back so many of my little-kid memories of growing up with the original trilogy.

As far as Rogue One-- I do feel it was better than TFA. I found Jyn Erso to be a much more believable character as compared to Rey, and I don't understand why Jyn seems to get similar "Mary Sue" hate (BTW, though I've figured out what it means, I never heard the term "Mary Sue" until TFA came out, and I'm not fond of the term).

Jyn's efforts to get the Empire's plans to the Rebellion were much more of a team effort; she needed and had a lot of help; whereas Rey (as many have pointed out) seemed to be too good at everything.

These are all just my humble opinions; others may disagree:)

I really liked TFA.

I think the thing about Star Wars is that the first two movies, Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back, are among the best films ever made. No Star Wars film that came after could ever be considered equal to them. But that doesn't mean that they are bad, it doesn't even mean they're mediocre. Return of the Jedi is a really good film. The prequels have glaring weak points, yes, but they also have really great aspects about them.

Now, The Force Awakens may be seen as a rehash of the original Star Wars. At least, this is what you're all parroting. But while it deliberately and quite clearly follows the plot structure of the original Star Wars, I think it's not justified to call it a rehash. TFA is clearly a film of its time. The villian Kylo Ren is weak and is shown striving for his grandfather's presumed greatness, but he has to fail, because the image he has of Vader is false. Finn is a character that would have been unthinkable in the original trilogy: a stormtrooper removing his helmet, showing his individuality. Suddenly there are people on both sides, suddenly this war gets real. TFA is neither as innovative as the original trilogy nor as political as the prequels. But I think it is going in a more spiritual direction about what can be a moral center of a republic. Luke functions as a missing moral center in TFA, but we'll see whether it truly is the Jedi order who can be that center.

Oh, and Rogue One, obviously also not as good as ANH and TEB, is imo one of the greatest action films of recent years.
