Just rewatched this classic on Netflix. It's been so long since the last time I've seen it, but I still enjoyed it a lot in spite of being so dated. Probably why it's a classic. The late great Julius Carry's Sho-Nuff though a one-note villains is so entertaining to watch, Taimak really shows off his accomplished martial arts skill and does great in this his first role. As my childhood crush, seeing Vanity again made me smile, and kind of sad we've lost such a great talent and beauty. If you've never seen this, I suggest you check it out yourself, and learn why it was so adored by many along with the Wu-Tang Clan.

Vanity is cool, but what was up with her dancing in the film?

That movie is a real classic. They pretty much nailed everything in it: memorable and likeable characters (well except maybe his little brother), a lot of memorable scenes and a really good and memorable soundtrack. Hell, Taimak even nailed Vanity most likely!
Had to go and watch that intro once again with the music and Taimak's martial arts routine after I read this thread.
It's funny they used to cut out significant parts out of movies like this in the UK because they deemed nunchakus too violent or a bad influence on kids or something like that. I believe a lot of other european countries also ended up having cut versions of movies because of this (idiotic) policy. Kind of reminds me of the policy in germany today where they censor out everything nazi related out of video games etc. Shooting and stabbing and blowing up people is cool - just don't hit them with nunchucks kids!

I think it had to do with Vanity being made to perform on narrow and/or moving platforms.

This movie is MUCH better then Berry Gordy's "The Wiz", better directed, better flow, better MUSIC! Soundtrack is on my iPod and is FANTASTIC 80s pop!
Watched it many times as a kid, had such a crush on Vanity, she was GORGEOUS in this film! Leroy as a character was...almost unbelieveably ignorant & naive (considering his parents & brother), but it works for the story of the movie.
