I was a flannel shirt wearing metal head in high school and a buddy and me went to see this when it was in theaters just based on the music. Prince was a very good musician but he got a little weird in his older age.

A friend of mine had a friend who was Prince's personal audio engineer much later in his career and one Friday, Prince tells him "I'm gonna record some tracks this weekend." So Monday comes and Prince says to the engineer "How were those tracks I recorded?" And the engineer says "What tracks, the tapes are blank." Then Prince says, seriously, (and I'm paraphrasing all this), I sent them from my mind to the studio over the weekend.

I can only imagine what the engineer said to that.

I kind of recently discovered that the leading lady, Apollonia Kotero, is a Mexican American. I had no idea, and this is not me pouring on the adoration on all things Mexican in descent, like I sometimes do. It's not even a prejudiced observation. It's just that Prince often seemed to have this trans-racial vision of life in some of his art. I know Hispanic is not a race, and she just looked and looks like a good-looking woman to me in the film - not really belonging to this racial group or that one. Apollonia fit Prince's vision in this film, IMO.

GusGorman--

I've never seen the film, but I have heard the conventional wisdom that it was awful, but, as a personal fan of the record-- it is positively fantastic, a very avant-garde little album, in my opinion --I am inclined to agree that it is one of the best movie soundtracks.

MongoLloyd--

Yes, a weird anecdote (never heard that one about Prince, but can believe it). However, Prince being Prince, I could see the Purple One being disappointed and shrugging it off, after the sound engineer said something like "I'm sorry, man, I didn't get it." Prince might have just thought that the engineer, being hopelessly normal, just was not able to receive transmissions from his higher intellect:)

I wonder if there's a psychic somewhere out there with a bunch of Prince tracks in their head?

Hahaha, friggin' Prince and his lost tracks floating around in the ether somewhere. Makes me think of Kelso in Heat, "... you just got to know how to grab it."

I had no idea Apollonia was Mexi-American. I think I always assumed she was black.

Right, well Prince liked his Latinas in his films. The love interest in Graffiti Bridge is Ingrid Chavez, another pretty Mexi-American lady. In Under the Cherry Moon, his character Christopher Tracy romanced a French woman played by Kristin Scott Thomas, who's Caucasian.

I recall renowned film critic Roger Ebert making a comment at one point about Prince to the effect of, "Why doesn't he stick to women of his own race in his movies?" I'm pretty sure that's a paraphrase.

Roger Ebert was married to a black woman. Ha ha. Figure it out.

Everyone has a "type" and I think it's obvious that Prince liked Hispanic ladies. He even married one as far as I know.

Right, her name is Mayte Garcia. I believe she's boricua.

I know a lot of people claim to have some kind of a "type." One of my buddies called it his "imprint." I don't really have a type. I like a chick who has a nice amount of backfield; that's about it. It doesn't have to be very big. And Prince might have been enchanted with the Latinas, but he also went out with black women - I've read that he went out with Denise Matthews aka Vanity, Susan Moonsie who was also of the trio Vanity 6, and Nona Gaye. Susan and Nona don't look a whole lot like Mayte does, in my opinion. Prince dated from chocolate to butterscotch, complexion-wise. RIP Prince

Most people have a type, but certainly there are exceptions as with most things.

Hmm, in retrospect, the lovers-quarrel song "When Doves Cry" worked very well in the film's context, but I was disappointed by how the video accompanying it was just that - a music video. I don't seem to recall it advancing the story or plot at all... if anyone feels I'm wrong, feel free to correct me on this.
