Oba muži v začátcích středních let a stále na mizině, opouštějí rodinu a přátele, aby se plně věnovali malbě obrazů. Sobě navzájem byli poslední nadějí, ovšem kdyby spolu dokázali vyjít: Gauguin se právem obává, že Van Gogh je na pokraji nervového zhroucení, zatímco Van Gogh tvrdí, že Gaugin se drží příliš zkrátka. Pili, hádali se, vedli prostopášný život, ale především spolu malovali a sdíleli tuto divokou posedlost. Během dvou měsíců vytvořili řadu obrazů, dnes uznávaných mistrovských děl, ovšem za jakou cenu? Pro oba bylo jejich přátelství poslední možností na jakýkoliv vztah, mohlo ale přežít takovou intenzitu?
