WHY did they knock Bill Cage down to a menial combat role? I've watched the film multiple times and I see no explanation or reason for them doing that. Did I miss something?

because I believe the Colonel didn't care if he lived or died for that mission. Putting him there was menial punishment for his arrogance.

But he was sent there to meet with him and obtain his orders (which also doesn't make sense), so that doesn't explain how & why the decision was made prior to being sent there in the chopper.

Cage was just a PR guy with a Majors rank. the Colonel wanted him on the front lines to report the "great victory" they were predicting but Cage wanted no part of that since he wasn't a real soldier and told the Colonel he wasn't going and if he did he was going to tell a completely different story. Cage probably wasn't going out there in combat gear but being out front was not an option for him. The colonel saw that insolence and decided to just put him on the front lines in infantry unit as a deserter. That way Cage probably dies and the Colonel washes his hands of him. at least that is how I saw it.

OK, I just watched the scene again. I see what happened. When Cage tried to blackmail the general, I think that's when he decided to get even. But still, knowing that Cage would be killed, there's no accountability for sending their main propagandist into battle?
