I can't even say how many times I've watched Arthur but on the last viewing, when Arthur meets Bitterman in the hospital because Hobson is dying, I got the impression, due to how distraught Bitterman was that they may have been lovers (not that there's anything wrong with that).
Thoughts?

Perhaps you're reading a little too much into Gielgud's role. Yes he and many other English thespians were gay men, but I didn't catch any subtext in the film. The movie worked well because the plot was relatively simple and worked on the charms of its stars and I don't think they would have wanted the distraction of the viewer thinking too deeply about ancillary characters. (As fun and witty as Hobson was.)
