Discuss Sunshine

I liked this, and someone who apparently hates most movies, that is quite an accomplishment. The story was pretty good. It all could have been better though, I think that they didn't make me feel what I should have been feeling a lot of the time. Like I didn't have much attachment to the crew because they didn't really have any personalities, I felt like I joined mid story and missed a start, so when they start dying and stuff, I didn't really give a crap. I can't remember any of their names, etc. Also they should have made a bigger deal out of the creep sneaking on board from the Icarus. It wasn't too bad, but it could have been more dramatic. It also felt a bit weird how it went from typical disaster movie, omgz everything is going wrong omgz, to suddenly it is a horror movie in the last 20 minutes and everything changed, the tone, even the music, etc. It seemed a big jarring. I don't think it should have been one thing or the other, I think mixing it up could work in a film, I just don't think this film did a very good job of it.

Also I didn't understand what most of them were doing most of the time, which made it kind of boring at times. When they are tinkering with something technical, there was no explanation what it was, and I am tech geek and watch a lot of sci fi, so usually this stuff is never an issue. But this film seemed to have a lot of these moments where they were doing something and I couldn't feel any tension about the situation because I didn't really know what they were doing. It also meant that my attention started to wander when they were tinkering with stuff and nothing was really happening.

Also there were a few too many unrealistic things going on. I know you can't really have super realistic sci fi movies without ruining them, but some of it annoys me. It is such a cliche at this point to have crew that bicker with each other, especially in such an extreme way. Astronauts go through so many thorough personality tests, and this wasn't just some space mission, it was supposed to be the ultimate: SAVE ALL MANKIND FOREVER! So why the fuck is there that antagonistic piece of shit on the crew, poking everyone's buttons, and the other guy who was a total grump, and then the psych guy who seemed insane since the start and was burning himself regularly by staring at the sun. Come on, it is a few years on a floating hotel with a holodeck, it's a bit soon to start losing your marbles. I know it is necessary to have these kinds of things to give drama, but does it really need to be so cliched? Does every crew really need to have The A**hole, The Emotional Woman, The Unstable One, etc... Also, when will movie characters learn to not walk right up to the unknown entity? In this case he said the wrong thing to the insane Freddie Krueger guy and got stabbed for it, had he talked to him like a normal person from across the room, he wouldn't have potentially got himself killed and ALL OF THE HUMAN RACE in the process. Not saying it was a terrible film, I liked it, but I think a lot of this stuff could be better.

p.s. The fact that it is manned at all seems unrealistic as well. They are so advanced they can send that huge cruise ship a zillion miles into space, it can get that close to the sun without instantly incinerating, they have a nuke "the size of Manhattan", etc.. but apparently they can't aim it at the sun and set a timer. All this can be justified, but I don't think the film did a very good job of doing any of that. I kinda feel like this would have made an awesome 30 minute Star Trek episode, and they would have done a much better job of it.
