Malchow, German Democratic Republic, 1980. 20-year-old Anne is hiding Juri, a deserter of the Red Army. The two fall in love with each other. But their love is threatened: there is an arrest warrant and possibly a death sentence waiting for Juri. The two leave the country and flee to the West, leaving Anne’s six-month-old daughter Inga behind. Inga grows up with her grandparents and thinks that her mother died during a swimming accident. 25 years later she meets the literature professor Robert, who sends her on the trail of her past. He met Inga’s mother Anne during one of his seminars. At first Inga is resistant, but then she asks for Robert’s help. Together they take off on a journey through Germany, in search of Inga’s mother Anne...

Inga est une jeune femme qui a grandi avec ses grands-parents. Elle n'a jamais connu sa mère, qui l'a abandonnée en 1980 pour fuir l'Allemagne de l'Est avec un réfugié, déserteur de l'Armée rouge. Des années plus tard, âgée de 25 ans, Inga croise le chemin d'un professeur, Robert, qui lui affirme avoir connu sa mère. Alors qu'elle croyait qu'elle était morte noyée, Inga décide de partir à la recherche de sa génitrice...

Inga ist elternlos aufgewachsen und lebt als Antiquarin im mecklenburgischen Malchow. Da taucht im November 2007 Literaturprofessor Robert auf, der angibt, ihre Mutter Anne am Bodensee getroffen zu haben. Inga konfrontiert ihre Großeltern damit und muss erfahren, dass sie und das ganze Dorf sie von Kind auf belogen haben. Mit Robert begibt sie sich auf die schwierige Suche nach ihrer wahren Familiengeschichte.

Alemania Oriental, 1980. Anne, una chica de veinte años, y Juri, un desertor del Ejército Rojo que se esconde en su casa, se enamoran. Los dos huyen del país y se dirigen al Oeste, dejando a Inga, la hija de Anne, en casa de sus abuelos. La niña crece creyendo que su madre ha muerto. Veinticinco años más tarde, Inga conoce al profesor de literatura Robert, que posee datos para localizar a Anne. Aunque, al principio, Inga se muestra escéptica, acaba acompañando a Robert en un viaje por Alemania para buscar a su madre.
