I dunno what it was up against that year, but definitely a nom would've been well deserved. One of the best monster flick socio-political allegories I've ever seen, and it had a really clever dark comedy vibe like many great scifi satires (Brazil, Robocop, Starship Troopers, etc). Maybe now with the success of Parasite, audiences will re-discover this gem.

Wow, I never knew each country was only allowed 1 submission. Makes me wonder who makes the decision for each country and how they pick.

Although I can't be sure, but I would bet that politics has a lot to do with it in some countries?
