He seems like it was leading to a great battle and Harry grabs the wand ending it?
That couldn't have killed him. Their other adventures were way better and epic. How did it go wrong?

It's better in the book, in my opinion but it doesn't really work on screen so I can understand why the movie went in the direction it did.

Just noticed you never got a reply to this. In the book, Harry casts the disarming charm to counteract Voldemort's killing curse. Because the Elder Wand's allegiance is to Harry (Dumbledore disarmed Grindelwald, Malfoy disarmed Dumbledore and Harry disarmed Malfoy), Voldemort stands no chance to win when their duel and the killing curse backfires, killing him. Harry doesn't kill Voldemort, he effectively kills himself through greed and arrogance.
