This guy didn't actually exist as a complete character in The Hobbit book.
Honestly I can't understand what Peter Jackson was thinking when he made that much effort to create a character out of nowhere, that it turned out to be that good that he actually cancelled all the other elvish characters of all the movies. He literally eliminated them and deserves his own movie.
As for this trilogy as a whole...well...is it just me who expected to see what the tittle said? The Hobbit!! But we saw everything else except the hobbit!
Gabby sub plots, too many battles, too many effects etc etc etc...
Peter Jackson has probably never heard that less is more.

Lee Pace rocks.
yeah, the story is stretched very thin to accommodate three films. i think the original plan of two parts would have served it better.

Indeed . Lee Pace is a very talented actor.
The character of Thranduil as they made it has something iconic and aJapanese, so to say, quality; like some characters of the Japanese Manga if you get my point that are heroic but with style. Thranduil is also how I had imagined that the Elves looked like when I first read Tolkien's books 40 years ago.
The Hobbit is a rather small book. It's plot could easily be covered in one and single a bit more extended film.
