Discuss Frances Ha

I feel like I have to preface this discussion with the admission that this is one of my favorite films. I saw it at the right time, and everything seemed to agree with me: the characters - Frances in particular - and the situations they get themselves into. It's a great movie about responsibility (or lack thereof) and facing the sobering process of getting old and not having the same connections or relationships because, y'know, life(?). Because I love it so much, I recommend it every chance I get.

When I recommended it to a friend who's been wanting to get more into film, she spent an afternoon with it and messaged me that "it was cool, but sad." Her main critique of the movie, however, regarded the lack of other ethnic representation (African American, Latino, etc.) in the cast. I really didn't know how to respond to her, other than asking, "But you enjoyed it, right?" I can't comment on the diversity in the American Northeast, since I haven't lived or traveled there, and my only points of reference are others' personal experiences and art (books, movies, etc.). I know that I have no place in expecting others to enjoy a movie without their predispositions; so my question is, does your enjoyment of a movie decrease when you notice the lack of color in it? Would this movie be something completely different had they cast a Latina or an African American woman to play Frances?

Cheers!
