Since Mr Goldsmith is featured so prominently in this film, I wanted to find out more about him. To my surprise, there's hardly any info on the internet.
Spoilers: Also, why does Herzog start with the report about Goldsmith being lost when he never explains what has happened to him?

I also wondered what happened to Goldsmith when I saw the movie for the first time. He was a correspondent for the Associated Presss when he got arrested by soldiers during the first Liberian civil war, in 1990. He was accused of being a spy (as in 1977 in Central African Republic). He was released 1 month later and even attended the premiere of the movie at the Mostra Venice Festival, in september 1990. He died a few weeks later in France, in october.
