(I hope this makes sense!) Critics said that in this film he made Clouseau indeed seem like he came from somewhere.But they also insisted that Sellers as Clouseau also seem to come from some where just as much.

What does that mean? Well, sometimes In a movie or TV show you have hard time conceiving that the character you are watching really has a past. It seems like the characters just exist for the moments you watch them. Especially when a TV show or movie is gimmicky or slapstick. Alan Arkin's Clouseau did not seem to have a past.
