Discuss Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

Been on a movie binge recently and going from let down to let down is hard going, so this was a nice change of pace! I knew nothing about it before hand, never saw the originals. I wasn't sure I would like it at first because as open minded as I can be, a talking monkey, writing English, etc. was too much. I laughed and then thought about turning it off. But I hung in there and pretty soon I decided that it wasn't even about apes at all, the whole thing is supposed to be symbolic of real life. So seeing an ape driving a tank and whizzing around like Rambo with 2 assault rifles stopped being laughable and started to be interesting and exciting. It is really well made, a few dodgy effects but mostly it looked good and convincing, good story and actors. But the message is the best bit. I tried googling it and surprisingly didn't find the results I assumed would be everywhere.... The humans represent "The West". The apes represent another culture, ie, Muslims. Ceasar is the educated moderate leader. But Koba represents extremists. Dreyfus represents human ignorance. I dig it.

p.s. I would have liked to see that big Silverback get busy.

Interesting idea, although it’s a little discourteous to view Islam as a newly mutated species and humans as the old established civilized West, Islam has been around since the 7th century and conquered vast swathes of land over a short period of time, long before any notion of the West as we view it today.

But you could easily view the humans as the Christians, Jews and Pagans of the Middle-east of the 7th Century, whilst Islam could be the Apes, who began small and peaceful but then by conquest and violence had great success.

If in the third film Ceasar dies, is worshiped as a great prophet and two ape factions split leading to the conquest of the planet by force, you may be on to something! grin
