Discuss Capricorn One

I am astounded that 3 astronauts would attempt crossing a desert during the day time. I know it was necessary for the film but it's just beyond dumb.

Waiting for nightfall to make that journey offers SO many advantages:

Cooler air, which would would negate sweating, sun exposure, and would offer a higher relative air density so - more oxygen.

Stay in the plane, use the radio to call for help.

Easier to signal aircraft at night if radio out of range or non-functional.

The helicopters would not be combing the desert at night.

I'm guessing you haven't seen the movie (full disclosure: I actually haven't seen the very beginning of the movie, but I did see the film from the desert sequence onward, many years ago). What MongoLloyd is referring to is this:

SPOILERS!!!

The three astronauts are not actually on Mars; they are participating in a hoax to make it appear the U.S. has sent a ship to Mars. Anyway, while on Earth, the astronauts' plane (not a spaceship) crashes in the desert on Earth; they then try to cross that desert during the daytime. Although a night here on Earth in the desert would certainly be cold, it of course would not reach the fatal chill of a Martian night.

BSG is too dark for me.
