THE SERGEANT is the story of the dark inner struggle of Master Sergeant Albert Callan to overcome the overwhelming attraction he feels for one of his charges. In the staid and stifling environment of a post-World War II army post in France, Callan's deeply repressed attraction to other men surfaces when he encounters handsome Private Swanson. Maintaining the rugged "man's man" image of a war hero, Callan barks orders to his underlings. Later, lonely in his solitude, he recalls the frightening experiences of war and the events that led to this crossroads. Filled with self-loathing and unable to act on the natural attraction he feels for Swanson, Callan's affection festers into antagonism. He pushes Swanson constantly with verbal assaults and undeserved punishments.

Affecté en 1952 dans une compagnie cantonnée en France, le sergent chef américain Albert Callan a décidé de reprendre en main le camp où les hommes négligeaient la discipline. Homme de poigne, autoritaire, inflexible, son attention est attirée par le jeune et beau soldat Tom Swanson qui contraste avec ses camarades par l'excellence de sa tenue et par sa conduite. Callan propose à Tom de travailler dans son bureau, il s'agit en fait d'un ordre et le jeune homme s'exécute. Tout se passe très bien jusqu'au jour où le sergent retient Tom après les heures normales de service afin de l'empêcher d'aller retrouver Solange, une jeune française habitant la ville voisine. Tom devient le "compagnon" de toutes les sorties de Callan. Et alors qu'une amitié particulière commence à s'installer, Solange tente de récupérer son fiancé… En réalité, le sergent Callan refoule l'attraction qu'il ressent pour les hommes...
