Watched it for the first time today, and I have to say this film has definitely held up over time. The acting and direction are exceptional.

Agree.

Watching the DVD with commentary by director Kaufman, you gain an even greater appreciation when you hear how thoughtful he was in making this film and about all the little subtle touches/background details included by him and why he did them (within the context of the story).

I agree about the good commentary by Kaufmann. It's a pity that he wasn't full director on more films that he did.

And storywise, it makes a nice change to be invaded by "space flowers" rather than the more obvious "metal ships". Jeff Goldblum would see those ships 18 years later in Independence Day - a special effects film that's nowhere near as believable or chilling as Invasion of the Body Snatchers.
