Discuss Invasion of the Body Snatchers

So at the end of the film we find out that Matthew has been transformed and that the Pod people have spread out across the country (perhaps the globe?), but then again, the fact that they are unloading buses of humans in San Francisco seems to suggest that San Fran is their main area of operating, that the rest of the country may not be transformed yet.

And we saw Matthew before his death, we saw him destroy one of the Pod growing facilities, so that's a sign of hope, as small as it may be. The film does have a rather depressing and nihilistic ending, but did anyone else see this small victory as an indicator that the aliens could indeed be fought, and perhaps eventually beaten by the remaining human race? Obviously, this is all speculation since we never see any indication of that apart from the destruction of the pod building.

Anyway, I just watched this film and I have to say, it's one of the scariest and greatest sci-fi/horror films I've ever seen. Really terrifying. I can't remember the last time I actually felt so tense during a film. I think now I'll make a cup of tea and go outside, get some air.

And then I'll watch 'Body Snatchers' (1993).

  1. I respect this movie for giving me nightmares well into my adult life, every few months I have a body snatcher dream.

  2. I would love a SEQUEL to a body snatcher movie as opposed to a remake, even if it was a book instead of a movie. My favorite franchise of sci fi combined with horror is Invasion of the Body Snatchers.

  3. The original book took place in MILL VALLEY CALIFORNIA where I was raised and where my brother still lives, where my mother died. I knew the street names and some of the businesses mentioned how weird is that? Plus San Francisco is very close to Mill Valley so the movie was scary in how close to home it was too!

I honestly didn't like the movie.

It was suspenseful, but then I kept expecting more...

Like discovering more about the pod aliens, etc.

So, that was a letdown.

Plus, I was hoping the main character was going to be able to save earth from the pod aliens.

The ship scene was odd. Why use a ship for transporting the pods when they're from outerspace?

Wouldn't they use their spaceships to transport the pods?

On 2nd thought, if they did that, then they'd be easily recognized, so maybe that's why they didn't transport the pods using spaceships.

Re: Possible outcome after the ending? (SPOILERS, obviously)

Your questions are best answered in reverse order.

They didn't arrive in spaceships, nor did they arrive as pods; more like spores (that's what the main title sequence is depicting). As Kibner tells Matthew, "We drift through the universe from planet to planet, pushed on by the solar winds. We adapt... and we survive." So when they arrive on Earth, they adapt to the atmosphere, climate and so forth, proliferating in their adapted form (in this case, pods), which then produce similarly-adapted entities (human duplicates). Or, as the saying goes, "When in Rome..."

So that's why the use of ships: to transport the already-adapted form (pods) to other countries and continents to ensure their proliferation (when stuff's just blowing around in space, there's no way to control or guarantee where it will land). Look at it this way: a lot of it must've come down in the seas, so what would that do? Just make more fish.

Thanks, for your explanation.

That makes perfect sense!

I thought they were moving very fast and took the city within two weeks. Moving by board and trucks they would take the country within a few months. Within two years humans would be nearly extinct

That was a very well done ending. I appreciate how they left it ambiguous for a while regarding Matthew. It caught me off guard, and yes some parts were chilling. Elizabeth shrieking at him in her new naked body was creepy as hell.

My take is that there would be no way for people to fight them off. Even with all of Matthew's efforts destroying the factory, he didn't even survive their copying, so I feel like it would be futile for anyone to try. They spread too fast for anyone to have a chance against them. Besides, you would have to sleep at some point. They'd just assimilate you then.

They could be killed too. The pods I mean. A fire accidentally breaks out on the ship at sea carrying them they are gone.

Realistically word would spread fast. They would not get to own the world. Total world domination probably was not in their plans. Just half of the world maybe. But a fat lot a good that would do people stuck in their successful mist.

About that idea of a book being a sequel. It would not count as canon. I commented on the Star Trek saga ( also of course starring Nimoy) and pointed out that a book talking about the years between the end of Star Trek's TV saga in 1969 and the beginning of the first movie that came out ten years later was NOT showing what the characters had in fact been doing in the intervening years. A fictional book always exists in a different fictional universe than the movie it is based on or visa versa!
