Discuss The Fly

I had seen the Croenburg remake of The Fly with Jeff Goldblum a few years ago and only felt meh about it. I just watched the original film and loved it! I like how the story is more from the wife's point of view and as the audience we learn what's really going on in bits and pieces as she discovers it too. Also really liked the sci fi aspect of it, how he basically made a teleportation machine and all that that implies. It also keeps a sense of the metamorphosis and the horror of losing his humanity, along with parts of his body, and having to suffer that in seclusion and secret. Vincent Price was perfect in his part. It is clear he's in love with the wife (think it was his sister in law) who chose the other man and didn't notice him. I am left wondering if he was merely an opportunist who stepped in to take the fathers place once he was gone, or if he manipulated a bad situation and took advantage. Very interesting...

It was scary at the end with   the head on the fly, yelling help me   scream

SPOILERS.

I've only seen bits and pieces of the original film, but refuse to watch anymore of it. I was a child when I caught two key moments: a shot of Price's scientist with his head transformed into a hideous, man-sized fly's head, and the horrific death of the insect with the tiny human head, saying "Help me, save me," or something to that effect. That's absolutely nightmarish stuff for a kid to take in. When I saw David Cronenberg's remake years later, I was pleasantly surprised by the slick treatment he gave it. It's rather gross, as Cronenberg took full advantage of advancements in special effects. I do prefer it, though.

Cronenbergs version is gross, as is true for a lot of his work. But I enjoyed the original more for the reasons you didn't, the horror of it all. That scene towards the end is scary, disturbing stuff! I can't imagine seeing that as a kid!

I'm scarred for life.
