Discuss The Deer Hunter

Around 2:19 into the move, the guys are hunting and Michael sites a large deer in his sites. The then raising the gun and fires to purposely miss and says "OK" to the animal. Why?

maybe used to contrast with the violence later in the film?

i don't know, haven't seen the film in ages...

yeah def symbolic. Pre war he is pretty gung-ho about "one shot", hunting, and eager to get into war. I guess it's the comment is on his change post war and it's violence.
