I really don't like this movie very much, but it's like a train wreck I can't look away from. Any one else feel the same?

I do. It's all about a group of extremely selfish and shallow people, but I watch it anyway, go figure. Am I waiting for some kind of different vibe from it, lol? Or, like you, is it just like that wreck I can't seem to look away from? (Glad I'm not the only one.) :-)

I've never been able to stomach it from the start to its finish

No arguments. - All good and valid points.
Seems as though Andrew McCarthy is the only one in the cast able to act his way out of a dismal terribly immature script, but the rest do photograph well for lacking any talent.
Two other reason to watch - David Foster and John Paar really know how to rise above the bargain basement cast and crew with their fine, professional, high-quality scoring.
So, when you think "Saint Elmo's Fire," better to remember the soundtrack rather than this horrible script and sociopath tantrum performances.

Since I don’t watch reality TV, I guess I haven’t seen that many train wrecks.

Pretending that it's a sequel to the Breakfast Club is how I typically get through the movie.

Still a lot of people were like that in the 80s (and now) as well as at high end colleges, all future Gorden Gekkos in the making.
