While Linda Hunt is an actress I have enjoyed in various roles over the years, I turned on The Year of Living Dangerously half expecting to find her Oscar-winning performance a reward for an audacious stunt, that is the casting of a short female actor as a male dwarf. So it was a pleasant surprise indeed to be blown away by her powerful, moving, three-dimensional characterisation, the best thing by far about an otherwise unmemorable film. She leaves Mel Gibson and (especially) Sigourney Weaver in the dust. A truly deserving winner of the Supporting Actress Oscar.
