Duckie.... The character isn't good until the last 15 minutes and as such John Cryer is awful until the last 15 minutes. Broderick or AMH would have done waaay better in the role. If they wanted different, Broderick would have done an amazing job. I could see people saying " Anthony Michael Hall again!?" But still, he's awesome

Duckie was a funny character and I actually enjoyed the way John Cryer played him, but I don't understand why anyone would actually want Duckie to be with Andi at the end. I'm curious how Broderick would have played Duckie.

I think Broderick may be too good looking to play Duckie, (what about Molly Ringwald playing home coming queen and a mutant? More in a minute)but as Ferris, he was a pretty eccentric character. Watch the last 15 minutes of Pretty in Pink ( currently on Hulu) and see if Cryer doesn't actually look like Broderick. He did to me at least and that's why I thought he'd have been good..... Now about Molly- she's good looking enough to be believable as a popular preppy girl in Breakfast Club yet she's still able to pull off the weird "mutant" Andie in Pretty Pink. I think it's pretty awesome.

I could see Broderick playing Duckie because he typically plays nerdy/neurotic men and Ferris is probably the "coolest" character he's ever played.

He would've played it as sauve. I guess in John's mind Broderick could never be a best friend type or nerdy. A leading man who gets the girl. Also he had troubles on the set and forced to change his first ending which would be a double blow to him

I heard the ending had to be reshot- why? I just watched it again with my brother (2nd time today) and while Duckie is annoying and a bit over the top, Cryers acting at times painful on account of trying too hard- when he's shown in his room..... holy crap.... the character comes together. It's no wonder he acted and dressed the way he did.... I'm loving this movie
Also- the Broderick-ness was how he looked at the camera after that chick at prom noticed him. I do think Broderick would have been too cool and being the same year it'd have been hard for people to separate the two... maybe if I didn't hate 2 and a half men, I'd have been more open to Jon cryer

IIRC the original ending had Andie and Duckie go to the prom as a couple but it didn't go down well with the test audiences who wanted her to end up with the rich and more conventionally attractive Bland, so they reshot the ending.

Yeah, and Harry Dean Stanton feels very out of place for me as Andie's father, with repeat viewings. It's like John Hughes went out of his way to get the most "sad sack"-looking guy he could find to play the poor girl's daddy. I kinda feel like Hughes' focus on teens in some of his earlier films could've skewed his perspective towards older people somewhat. He was good at exploring that youthful generation's inner world, in my opinion. But maybe he was too focused on the teenies.
You're right, the Duckie character stands out like a sore thumb in the film, for the most part. He's just this guy who's hopelessly in love with Andie, and there's not much more to him than that. Oh, and he plays a role in Hughes' facile exploration of class, too. I suppose Duckie's best moment was lip synching to Otis Redding's "Try a Little Tenderness."
The casting was a bit off in Pretty in Pink.

Plus he looked pretty hot in his prom outfit (except for the shoes). Duckie was pretty odd but he was way better than Blaine! Blaine was boring all the way through. Spader was at his 'most scrumptiousness' in this movie, the character was horrid but...?

Yea, didn’t Duckie say that the name Blaine sounded “like a microwave?” Blaine was bland.

Here's the line:
Andie: You know you're talking like that just because I'm going out with Blane
Duckie: His name is Blane? Oh! That's a major appliance, that's not a name!
