Discuss The Salton Sea

SPOILERS!!! I went in blind and watched it last night for the first time last night not really knowing what to expect after listening to Thomas Newman's soundtrack and was pleasantly surprised it wasn't as dark and depressing as it might have been... There are some genuinely funny moments, the story doesn't linger too much on the bleakness of drugs or the death of Kilmer's wife. I really liked how Kilmer was witty but pathetic as Danny ratting out dealers to the cops, but and on the ball when he was the vengeful Tom... We get to see what operates the two personalities... I think this was Kilmer's best work since Heat and surprised how it went under the radar, very subtle... I also liked that not all the issues in his life shown in the story as Danny were resolved at the end, like his relationship with his neighbour that at one time promises to become something more and her problems with her daughter and abusive boyfriend... The look of the film, the style and music (which is perfect) only added to this story of possible (not guaranteed) redemption of a flawed, but very human, very ordinary character.

I dig it, but I can see why some people didn't like it. As you pointed out, all the humor is intentional, but it's ''quirkiness'' is a little persistent. I think you need to be a Val Kilmer fan to fully appreciate this one.

I can't say I'm a massive fan of his... Only a few of his roles were great (that I've seen) - Heat and Tombstone being most noteworthy... But he was very good here... Need to rewatch this now as it's been almost a year!!

IVE ALWAYS LIKED VAL KILMER .HE IS NOT A FAVORITE HOWEVER.TOMBSTONE WAS AWESOME,HE WAS THE HEART OF THE FILM.OTHER THAN THAT VAL HAS ALWAYS BEEN GOOD BUT NEVER STANDS OUT TO ME.I SAW THE SALTON SEA WHEN IT CAME OUT AND HAVE SEEN IT 15 TIMES SINCE.THE SALTON SEA IS A MASTERPIECE AND VAL KILMER IS EXCEPTIONAL IN THE MOVIE.I WISH HE HAD MADE MORE FILMS LIKE THIS INSTEAD OF GOING THE BLOATED DIRECT TO DVD ROUTE.

It IS a very underrated or just under appreciated film. I actually first watched this on a rented DVD with a buddy and we were shocked by how awesome of a movie it is.
