Local Hero has long been one of my favourite films and I have lost count of the number of times I have enjoyed it. It is truly a comedy that beats its own drum. Everything clicks - the beautifully remote setting, the quirky characters, the simple storyline, the glorious Mark Knopfler score, the strange little touches here and there. One of the great movie endings, too - I get a lump in the throat every time.

The cast is a joy, from likeable lead Peter Riegert down to bit part John Gordon Sinclair as the mysterious biker. Burt Lancaster adds gravitas, Denis Lawson is a treat - and Peter Capaldi running is one of the funniest things ever.
