His name is Jonathan Mathias. At one point Neville watches an afternoon TV newscast with Mathias reporting about the deadly bacilli plague situation. Later, Mathias became sort of leader of the plague mutants who could not see in the light. This film has obvious Biblical overtones. Mathias is a sort of Biblical character as he in the Douay Apocrypha Catholic version of the Bible in the Book of Maccabees. The fact that Mathias is not in nearly every version of the Bible shows how is not a full-fledged Biblical character.
