At least one reviewer of "Cinema Paradiso" wondered about Toto's adolescent love interest, Elena. Until I heard of the "Drector's Cut" version, I thought that the film didn't have many loose ends. When the longer/original length version arrived in DVD, I bought it just to see what had been cut out of the "International Version." The edited footage does/doesn't add to the story, though it adds weight to character development, etc. I'd go on about Elena, but that's a Spoiler.

For the longest time, I've wondered about the films shown at the local theater, along with the (censored) kissing scenes. There are a number of lists and Internet pages that will satisfy this visual mystery. This movie has taken me back to the corrugated iron Aiea movie theater of the 1950's, whee I saw one or two of the "Cinema Paradiso" films. Does anyone else get that "lost in the 50's" (or another decade) feel of your local cinema?

I've only seen the Director's Cut (not through any specific consideration, just the dvd version I bought at the time) although I did read a while back re the differences.

I wonder if one's thoughts on the additional older Toto / Elena scenes might be effected by the viewer's age? I think if you're older you might prefer the ambiguity of never knowing what happened as that mirrors the sad reality of what happens in life. If you're younger perhaps you'd like that comfort of the possibility unrealistic (?) reunion.

But wasn't it only the longer version that explicitly show Alfredo had deliberately sabotaged their romance? I remember reading people didn't like that but it's interesting that he did that in order to ensure Toto left the island. You're left questioning whether that was a decision made truly through his love for Toto and a desire to 'see' him have a better life or a selfish decision made by him trying to correct the feeling he'd been trapped on the island himself. That ambiguity I like.

I think you hit the nail on the head with this one...read the trivia & director's cut details & I like the theatrical version better in that we DON'T know what happened to Elena...like life, sometimes those loves just...vanish. I, myself, reflect on certain school boy loves I've had back in the day...and often wonder where they are, what they're doing...even a little sad I didn't say some things I should've...DAMN this movie hit me right THERE man... broken_heart

After having seen the theatrical cut, I am curious about the longer cut. I may check it out one day.

I have only seen the theatrical cut, once, long ago. My memory is that the scenes with Philippe Noiret and the kid were enchanting - the rest of the film, less so. I really should check out the director's cut but while I appreciated the film, it's not one I have ever been interested in revisiting.

Director's Cut has an extra hour of content (movie goes to 3h). I watched the shorter version wondering what happened to Elena.

SPOILER: I prefer the DC version since you have some closure and more nostalgia feelings since you keep wondering What Would Have Happened with your life if you followed a different path.

Alfredo loved the kid and was a father figure. He thought Toto should've leave the island for a better life. To avoid being stuck in a theater just like him (just like during a scene in the beginning).

What I like about the movie is showing the paths you should choose. Career or "love". It doesn't matter what path. We will always wonder what would be of us if we chose the other, even if we did the right choice.
