Not just a nanny, but a live-in nanny! The mother didn’t work, unless you count building a greenhouse, which is something she totally could have just worked on during weekends when her husband was home or something. And the older child was already in school.
I feel like maybe it was more common when this movie was made for families to have full-time, live-in nannies. But every time I watch this movie, I laugh at how I can’t imagine a family in less need of a nanny.
